The Hare and the Tortoise
(Part
1)
A hare and a tortoise once
lived together in the same wood. The hare was very
fast. He liked to race other animals.
'I am the fastest animal in this wood,' he often said. 'I
can beat any of you in any race. Who wants to race me?'
The fox raced the hare every day. The hare always won. The
squirrel raced the hare for a prize of fifty nuts. The hare
won easily.
Fastest
‘I’m the fastest animal in the world,' said the
hare.
'No, you're not,' said the old tortoise.
The hare laughed loudly. 'What do you
know? You’re the slowest animal in the wood. It takes
you a week to walk fifty metres.'
Silly
tortoise?
'You’re quite fast,' said the
tortoise. 'But I think I can beat you.'
The hare laughed until tears ran down his white cheeks.
'Oh, that's very funny!' he said. 'You silly old tortoise!
You could never beat me!'
